ARCHIVED - More than 60 homes submerged by lava in 36 hours in La Palma
Some 1,628 buildings have been damaged or destroyed since the volcano erupted
Since its eruption on September 19, the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma has forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and decimated the infrastructure, public buildings and crops.
The devastation sadly continues as on Saturday December 4 a fast-moving lava stream cascaded through the island and destroyed more than 60 homes in just 36 hours, completely burying some and surrounding others.
According to the most recent data released by the Spanish Department of National Security on Thursday, the lava flow now covers 1,184 hectares of land while 1,628 buildings have been damaged or destroyed.
However, seismic activity has remained low and stable for the last few days, while the air quality is now judged to be good, after the levels of sulfur dioxide exceeded recommended levels in El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane on Wednesday.
The height of the ash cloud is estimated to have reached 3,000 metres and the volcanic cone now stands at 1,123 metres above sea level.
