ARCHIVED - More sizzling temperatures ahead: Spain weather forecast July 22-24
Dozens of communities remain on high alert across Spain this weekend as the mercury continues to rise
The second leg of the heatwave may not be as intense as the first but there will be no let up in temperatures this coming weekend, with half of the country under weather alerts and the mercury hovering around the 40 degree-mark from Thursday July 21 onwards.
The real temperature change will be felt on Friday July 22, however, and five communities (Andalucia, Aragon, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura) have been issued with an orange alert, which represents a significant risk.
Many of these same places are suffering from ongoing forest fires, which have already burnt through more hectares of land across Spain that at any time in the country’s history.
Most of Spain can expect a slightly cloudy or clear day on Friday, with light, variable breezes forecast along the Mediterranean coast.
Night-time temperatures are also on the rise, with the exception of the western coast and the Canary Islands, where they will drop a little.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Friday:
Alicante: 22ºC min; 32ºC max
Almeria: 24ºC min; 31ºC max
Malaga: 23ºC min; 30ºC max
Murcia: 21ºC min; 38ºC max
Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura maintain their orange weather warning on Saturday July 23 while a yellow heat alert has been issued for the Region of Murcia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia and Madrid.
Temperatures will continue to climb in general with the exception of northwest Spain, and the mercury is tipped to exceed 35ºC in the centre, south and southwest of the country. The thermometers will likely hit 40ºC in the Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Saturday:
Alicante: 23ºC min; 33ºC max
Almeria: 24ºC min; 31ºC max
Malaga: 24ºC min; 31ºC max
Murcia: 21ºC min; 38ºC max
Looking ahead to Sunday July 24 few changes are expected and slightly cloudy or clear skies will predominate in most of the country. Maximum temperatures will decrease slightly in Galicia but will continue to climb in the Canary Islands and in northern and eastern Spain.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Sunday:
Alicante: 24ºC min; 34ºC max
Almeria: 24ºC min; 33ºC max
Malaga: 24ºC min; 32ºC max
Murcia: 22ºC min; 40ºC max
