More wintery weather ahead: Spain forecast March 28-April 1
Easter weekend will be very unsettled in Spain, with plenty of showers and high winds expected
Widespread rain is forecast in Spain on Friday March 29
Holy Week in Spain has been marred by the arrival of storm Nelson, which has resulted in strong gusts of winds, snowfall, perilous sea conditions and widespread rain, particularly along the Atlantic coast. Incredibly, the deluge that hit parts of the west and inland Spain on Wednesday March 27 means they were among the wettest regions in all of Europe.
As we head into Easter weekend, the weather will remain unpredictable due to various fronts passing over the country. The temperatures will fluctuate wildly: while the west of Spain will be much colder than normal for this time of year, the Mediterranean area will remain relatively mild.
On Holy Thursday, March 28, the storm's fronts will move across the entire country, causing rain, wind and snow in nearly all communities. West and inland Spain can expect copious amounts of rain, along with storms in parts of Galicia, Castilla y León, Extremadura and Andalucía. The south, however, along with the Balearic Islands, should remain dry, if very breezy.
Good Friday, March 29, will see a very active cold front crossing Spain from west to east, resulting in snowfall in mountainous regions and plentiful rain throughout the country, including the Mediterranean.
The southwest, centre and eastern parts of the country, as well as the Cantabrian Mountains, will receive the most rainfall. Temperatures will rise in the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands, but decrease in central and western areas.
As we enter the weekend proper, more wintery weather will set in and most of Spain will be hit by storms and rain on Saturday March 30. Very heavy downpours are forecast in the Guadalquivir Valley and southern Andalucía and the gusts will be very strong in much of the south and east.
Daytime temperatures will drop across the board, although the mercury will still reach 18 or 20ºC in the Mediterranean.
Easter Sunday, March 31, will bring continued rain to the Atlantic side of the country, with intensified rain in the southwest. Snowfall is expected in all mountain systems in the north of Spain, potentially reaching the Mediterranean and Balearic regions in a weaker way. No significant temperature changes are anticipated, though the eastern third of the country will experience further decreases.
Looking ahead to next week, the weather should start to clear up on Easter Monday, April 1. It will be fairly cloudy overall and this could lead to showers along the Atlantic coast, but any rain that does arrive will be much lighter than previous days.
Daytime temperatures will climb in most areas.
