ARCHIVED - Morocco bans all international flights for two weeks
Travellers will be prohibited from flying from Spain to Morocco for two weeks
With the new omicron coronavirus variant rapidly spreading across the globe, Spain has announced that travellers from the UK will now need to be double vaccinated in order to enter and it has completely banned flights from South Africa and Botswana. In response to the highly virulent strain, Morocco will suspend all international flights from Monday November 29 for at least two weeks.
"Due to the rapid spread of the new variant of the Covid-19 virus - Omicron (B.1.1.529), particularly in Europe and Africa, and in order to preserve Morocco's achievements in the fight against the pandemic and protect the citizens' health, it was decided to suspend all direct passenger flights to the Kingdom of Morocco, for a period of two weeks, starting on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 11:59 pm", the government reported in a statement.
In recent weeks, Morocco has seen its lowest number of infections since the pandemic began, reporting just 116 cases and one death on Sunday.
The ban on flights is particularly worrying for Spain, whose north African enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta share a border with Morocco, and through which irregular migrants frequently attempt to cross into this country. Relations between Spain and Morocco have been strained in recent years, and at the height of the pandemic, travel restrictions meant that the Spanish government was unable to repatriate immigrants to their country of origin.
For the time being, however, Morocco has only committed to prohibiting flights for a fortnight, and authorities have dedicated the next few days to assessing the omicron situation. Once more is known, the Moroccan government will decide if further measures are required.
On Thursday November 25, Morocco suspended air connections with France in response to the rising number of infections.
