Mother of suspended FA president goes on hunger strike inside Spanish church
Royal Spanish Football Federation boss Luis Rubiales has been temporarily suspended following World Cup controversy
Ángeles Béjar, the mother of Luis Rubiales, barricaded herself into the Divina Pastora de Motril church in Granada on Monday morning, August 28, and declared that she would remain on hunger strike until her disgraced son is reinstated. She referred to the treatment of Rubiales as an “inhumane and bloody witch hunt” and vowed that her self-imposed confinement will continue “indefinitely, day and night.”
Rubiales was suspended by FIFA at the weekend after creating a media storm at the Women’s World Cup by kissing soccer player Jenni Hermoso on the lips at the medal ceremony.
His mother has now appealed to Ms Hermoso personally, asking her to come forward and “tell the truth” and share “the version of events she had at the beginning.”
Mrs Béjar has roundly rejected claims of sexual abuse against her son, maintaining that there was “consent on both sides”, despite the fact that the player in question released a statement to the contrary.
As a mother, she has asked for understanding and compassion over a situation that anyone could find themselves in.
"He is incapable of harming anyone," she insisted.
According to a family friend, Rubiales’s mother and sister remained inside the church after the parish priest left on Monday morning and shut the doors. The same source claims that she “does not stop crying, praying and asking God. She has reached her limit.”
