Murcia city public transport free over Christmas
All buses and bike lanes will be completely free in Murcia during the festive season
All public transport will be free of charge between December 1 and January 7 as part of the emergency measures to alleviate traffic congestion while road works are ongoing. The City Council expects the complimentary service to increase the use of public transport by as much as 50% during the Christmas period, when the population typically doubles and traffic jams are a constant source of irritation.
This measure will also function as a test bed for the new transport model that will be launched next year.
The free buses and trams are expected to be the most popular option for those venturing into the city, but use of the entire public bicycle system (MuyBici) will also be complimentary, something which should hopefully encourage this more sustainable means of getting around.
Another action includes adding more vehicles to the most popular bus routes (lines 28, 30, 31, 44 and 91).
An on-demand transport system will also be established for the first time in Murcia. In this sense, a pilot test will be carried out during the months of December and January, from the outlying districts to the city centre, on bus lines 1 (Alquerías-Llano de Brujas-Puente Tocinos-Murcia) and 2 (Alquerías-Los Ramos-Torreagüera-Beniaján-Los Dolores-Murcia), also during the entire Christmas season, both in the evening and at night.
On the routes where the on-demand system will be applied, passengers will use a mobile application to make a reservation for the stop indicating the time required.
"All this information about the demands of the different users will reach that mobile application and with that the appropriate schedule for the service is configured; in this way we will be able to optimise resources and be more efficient," Councillor for Mobility José Francisco Muñoz explained.
Muñoz clarified that this pilot test will not replace any of the ordinary lines.
