ARCHIVED - Murcia city still without Christmas lights
Murcia city council expects the installation to begin on Tuesday December 7

After several delays with Christmas lighting and decorations in Murcia city, the city council has announced that the installation of the seasonal lighting will begin on Tuesday December 7.
The city council blames a disparity in the prices of this year’s and last year's decorations which has caused an issue with the contract. A representative stated that “the quantity, length, quality and size... differs from what was foreseen by the municipal boards", adding that "you cannot compare the prices of two different products”.
This delay, along with the decision to not install the traditional Christmas tree in the Plaza Circular this year, has led to heavy criticism of the city council, as rival political parties take the opportunity to take jabs at the local authority. Locals and business owners have also expressed their disappointment at being one of the only municipalities in the Region currently without Christmas lights.
In addition, the Mayor of Murcia has warned that there will be 10% less lights this year and that the traditional ‘Cabalgata de Reyes’ celebrated on January 5 is in danger of being cancelled, and replaced with static activities, due to the rising incidence rate.
