ARCHIVED - Murcia city to invest 25 million in new bike and bus lanes
The Murcia City Council plans to create 44 more kilometres of bike lanes
As part of its long-term plan to improve sustainable mobility options in the regional capital, the Mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, has approved a budget of 25,543,991 for the development of more bike lanes and Rapid Bus Transit lines in the city.
While some of the cost will come out of the municipality coffers, the project will be co-financed by the European Union through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan-Next Generation EU Fund.
Just last week, the Cartagena City Council requested an investment of 5 million euros from Brussels to expand its own number of bicycle lanes, in addition to building to new car parks and improving the existing bus shelters.
The plan in Murcia is to create 44 more kilometres of bike lanes and 43 kilometres of segregated bus lanes. The seven phases of the project, which have already been awarded to different contractors, will begin in November and take approximately eight months to finish.
Several other mobility tasks are currently underway, such as the modernisation of the municipal traffic light system and the development of new technologies to better analyse the flow of traffic.
In addition, the construction of the intermodal hubs in Floridablanca and Plaza Circular are expected to begin in the near future.
With all of these works, the Murcia City Council aims to offer accessible, affordable and attractive public transport options which will ease traffic congestion while at the same time promoting a healthier environment.
