ARCHIVED - Murcia Entierro de la Sardina festival in Genoa, Italy is hailed a spectacular success
Murcia's Burial of the Sardine festival has been declared of International Tourist Interest
Murcia celebrated its spectacular Burial of the Sardine, a festival declared of International Tourist Interest, in Genoa, Italy on Saturday May 21 when floats and dancers filled the streets with colour and fireworks.
Hailed a resounding success, the festival was organised by the municipalities of Genoa and Murcia in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Italy, and was part of a program of events to consolidate the twinning between the two cities.
"Genoa recently held its traditional pesto competition in Murcia and now we have shared one of our most characteristic festivals with the people of this capital of the Italian region of Liguria," said Murcia City Council's Councillor for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Pedro García Rex, adding that the event will "act as a springboard" to attract more Italians to the region.
Four large floats paraded through the street of Genoa and more than 1,000 gifts were handed out to children before the climactic burning of the sardine to the traditional anthem while a fireworks display lit up the sky.
The event was rounded off with a large paella and the tasting of popular Murcian dishes.
"We have launched a major tourism promotion campaign, of which the festival is a part, supported by the Spanish Embassy in Italy to highlight the traditions and characteristics of Murcia as a destination in the whole of northern Italy," explained García Rex.
The Burial of the Sardine is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Easter Sunday and is the hugely popular culmination of a week of parades, dances and festivities in the streets of Murcia.
