Murcia launches new app to prevent illegal parking in disabled spaces

A new app has been developed in the Region of Murcia to check the validity of parking cards for reserved on-street parking for disabled people and those with reduced mobility.

The Ministry of Social Policy, Families and Equality, through the Murcian Institute of Social Action (IMAS), and the Ministry of Economy, Finance, European Funds and Digital Administration, through the Directorate General of Information Technology and Digital Transformation, have designed this app which local police, parking officers and other officials will be able to access.

It will allow them to check the identification of the card holder and the permit’s validity in real time, to ensure that all disabled badges used in Murcia cars are legitimate and up-to-date, simply by reading the QR code or the CITE number printed on the permit.

The aim is to prevent fraud when it comes to disabled parking, such as disabled badges being duplicated or continuing to be used even after they have expired.

Prior to Brexit, UK citizens in Spain were able to use their ‘Blue Badges’ to park in handicapped parking spaces, but the Brexit agreement between the two countries does not include a provision for the UK disabled badges to continue to be used in Spain.

Any non-EU national in Spain needs to apply for a Spanish disabled parking badge, and must be a resident in order to qualify.
