Murcia photo of the month August 2024
Here is the top image of the month taken by the Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC)
What a difference an hour can make! LADCC’s monthly competition provided some beautiful photographs of members’ interpretations of ‘The Golden Hour’. This is the time, either one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset, when the light changes to a golden glow. Many photographers and film makers use this natural light to improve their work, and so it was that the camera club were once again set a challenging task to portray their interpretations.
There was a great variety in the types of photos taken, with the interpretation of ‘golden hour’ varying greatly from a soft golden glow through to the actual sunrise or sunset. As a result, members scored images according to their own interpretation and so the points awarded for each image this month were slightly lower than normal.
Harry Holt came out on top with a beautiful shot of one of the windmills in El Algar, Murcia, entitled ‘Solitude’. Such is his dedication to the cause that Harry went back, after winning this month’s competition, to take another picture of the same windmill but at a different time of day, thus showing what a difference light can make in one’s photos.
Harry Holt’s winning photo was taken on a Canon EOS 90D with 18-135mm EFS nano zoom.
Here is the same El Algar windmill in normal sunlight:
Harry has also shared some photos he took back in 2009 when the windmill was still in operation. He explained that the wheel is delivering water to the channels delivering to the fields, not like today when they have large reservoirs to hold the water and then pump it to the fields for irrigation.
This month the club welcomed young guest Holly, who was on school holidays. She managed a very creditable second place in the competition with her photo ‘Fairground Sunrise’.
At our monthly workshop, Louise McCartney was our ‘speaker of the month’ and expanded on member Richard Townend’s topic ‘Macro Photography’ as he couldn’t be present. This is the topic for the club’s next monthly competition and Louise provided the members with many ideas and tips to improve or, in some cases, even attempt macro photography. In essence this is photographing something larger than it is in real life. It is very similar to ‘close-up’ photography but is an extreme close-up. You need to be able to home in on the subject without a shaky hand(!) and without losing the focal point of your subject. This was an excellent session and a big thanks to Louise and Richard for sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge with the group.
The club usually meets twice a month with an indoor workshop and often an outing toward the end of the month, where the group gets together to collectively work on the monthly competition. The club welcomes new members, either visitors or residents, as with modern day technology we can all keep in contact for training sessions, sharing knowledge etc or more regularly via ‘group chats’.

Share the pleasure of photography in the Mar Menor area
The Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC) was founded in 2006 and was originally called the LA Digital Cafe, where members met over a coffee to discuss photography. This quickly developed into a more formal programme of monthly photo competitions and outings to places of photographic interest.
Over the years, the club has adapted to the changes in camera technology and techniques, and continued throughout Covid by using ‘Zoom’ for online meetings and learning sessions.
Fast forward to 2024, and the club is now a small, enthusiastic, friendly group where members encourage and support each other at the start of, and throughout, their photographic journey. The group includes a wide range of people with varying skills, all of whom are happy to share techniques, tips and ideas to improve one’s hobby.
They have monthly competitions and outings that provide an opportunity to explore different aspects of photography and develop camera craft and artistic skills. Their indoor sessions may include in-house training, reviews of monthly competitions or planning outings to cover topics discussed.
They meet once a month at the ‘Centro Cultural las Claras’ in Los Narejos, which has super facilities and ample parking. Any outings are usually towards the end of the month to link in with our regular competitions.
