ARCHIVED - Murcia truckers threaten to extend strike into January
Thousands of truckers have been called to strike in the Region of Murcia before Christmas
Some 3,800 truckers planning to strike between December 20 and 22 in the Region of Murcia have now threatened to extend the stoppages into January, seriously endangering the supply to stores and supermarkets over the Christmas period. Unions throughout Spain have also announced industrial action between December 23 and January 2 and the strikes will impact 25,000 drivers, 15,000 of whom make long-distance trips.
If both calls to action go ahead, truckers in Murcia could be off the road for two full weeks during the height of the holiday season.
Representatives are calling on the government to increase overtime payments and compensation for night work, and have complained that their profit margins have shrunk considerably this year following the 40% hike in fuel prices. The objective of the strikes is to secure legal support that allows transport companies to pass on the increased costs to their customers as well as agreeing on fair payment for the stoppage of trucks during loading and unloading.
The general secretary of the regional employers’ association Froet, Manuel Perezcarro, has warned that the action could lead to bare supermarket shelves this Christmas, and has urged Murcianos to “be proactive and stock up” before the strike begins on December 20.
