Musical chairs time again in Mazarron Town Hall as election results produce no clear winner
The same power-sharing pact could retain control of Mazarrón council for the next 4 years
The results of the municipal elections which were held throughout Spain on Sunday May 28 have shown a pronounced general swing in favour of the PP and Vox parties, but in Mazarrón the voting patterns are broadly similar to those of four years ago and no party succeeded in winning an absolute majority.
Of the 21 seats available in the council 8 were claimed by the PP (one more than in 2019), 6 each by the local UIDM party (also one more than in 2019) and the PSOE (as in 2019) and Vox retain their single representative. Ciudadanos, who won two seats in 2019, did not take part in the 2023 election.
It is not until June 17 that the results of coalition talks among the parties will be confirmed as Councillors are sworn in and the Mayor or Mayoress elected, but it is possible that the power-sharing agreement reached four years ago between PSOE and UIDM will be repeated. This would leave the PP in opposition once more despite winning more votes than any other group.
On the other hand, in the world of local politics it has been seen time and time again that it is unwise to count chickens before they are hatched, and there could yet be changes over the course of the next three weeks!
