ARCHIVED - Mysterious A Team rescues dogs trapped by lava in La Palma
A rescue mission had been planned to save the animals on the Canary Island
Days before the Aerocámaras drone company was planning a never-before-seen rescue operation of four dogs trapped by lava from the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on September 19, an unknown individual or group calling themselves the ‘A Team’ removed the stranded canines.
The four small dogs were trapped on a tiny piece of land that was surrounded by lava in the La Palma town of Todoque, a district that has been all but swallowed up by the volcanic material. Ash clouds and blinding gases meant it was impossible for a helicopter to access the site and so the authorities enlisted the help of the specialist company to use drones to recover the dogs.
As Aerocámaras were fine-tuning the preparations, people on the Island feared the worst as the animals hadn’t been spotted for several days. However, footage soon popped up on social media of a large banner left at the property which read: “The dogs are fine. A Team.” While the video didn’t appear until Thursday October 21, authorities now believe the dogs could have been removed at the beginning of the week.
The general director of Animal Rights, Sergio García Torres, has also released a statement confirming that the dogs are “safe and well”.
According to the experts, it would have been entirely possible, if extremely foolhardy, for people to access the enclosure on foot. Thermal imaging shows that there are points on the dry crust that have cooled to around 40 degrees, and so someone with a little knowledge and the right equipment could manoeuvre around it.
While the rescuers are being branded heroes by many, the Canarian authorities have pointed out that the area around the lava flow has been labelled an exclusion zone and so legally, if their identity is discovered, they could be in big trouble.
For now though, it still remains a mystery.
