ARCHIVED - Mystery of exotic snake found in Totana house
Has anybody lost a snake???????
A Totana resident had the fright of her life when she found a large, yellow snake in a flowerpot at her home on Friday in a residential district of the town.
She immediately called for help and Protección Civíl of Totana, who have had plenty of experience of capturing reptiles in the wrong places duly arrived and removed the offending snake, which was nearly two metres in length and not at all happy being moved.
But whereas returning snakes to their normal habitat is generally a straightforward case of driving up into the sierras behind Totana and releasing a snake into a more suitable environment than the front room of an agitated resident, this one provided a bit more of a challenge as it’s an exotic species and clearly doesn´t belong in Totana.
In the end, the snake was taken to a private company as the El Valle Wildlife recovery Centre on the outskirts of Murcia, and the Seprona division of the Guardia Civíl apparently declined the offer of taking on the snake.
It’s certainly not a native of Spain and appears to possibly be of American origin, possibly a maize snake (Elaphe Guttata or Pantherophis Guttata).
At the moment, no-one has come forward to claim the exotic reptile, so if you happen to know anyone who has lost a snake…………
