ARCHIVED - Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon semifinals due to abdominal injury
“It doesn’t make sense for me to play”: the Spaniard has forfeited his semifinal match

The decision means Nadal is out of the competition and will not face Nick Kyrgios tomorrow to compete for a place in the Wimbledon finals and Kyrgios will go through to the final by default.
“It doesn’t make sense for me to play. It’s very sad to report this,” Nadal said, just a month after he won the Roland Garros competition in France.
“It’s not easy to leave Wimbledon. I have to respect myself and not play if I’m not at my level. I cannot risk more and expose myself to stay three or four months out of the competition,” he continued.
In the quarterfinals, when he sustained the injury, Nadal was still able to beat his opponent by slowing down his serve from around 200kmh to 150kmh, and following through with a powerful return. However, he doesn’t see himself able to sustain the same against Kyrgios for an entire match.
He said: “I can’t see myself winning two matches like that. I can’t make the normal move to serve. But I’ve always said that the most important thing is happiness and health. It saddens me. I didn’t want to give up in the middle of a match. I found a way to finish it, but I had the decision now thinking about my future.”
This will be the 15th time Nadal has withdrawn from a tennis tournament since 2005 and the fourth time at a Grand Slam. Nadal withdrew in 2016 at Roland Garros with a left wrist injury and in 2018, first in Australia with an injury to the psoas iliacus in his right leg and then at the US Open with right knee problems.
He has stated he now thinks he’ll be out “for three or four weeks”.
