National Geographic names Mazarron as one of the essential getaways in Spain for 2024
This is the second honour bestowed on the Region of Murcia by the prestigious magazine
What a week it’s been for the Region of Murcia, with international acclaim flooding in left and right!
One of the best ways to break free from the monotony of daily life is to embark on a journey to a destination that offers a unique culinary experience or allows you to explore its streets and culture.
That’s according to National Geographic, which has recently released a list of 42 "essential" destinations to visit in Spain in 2024, and among them is the beautiful municipality of Mazarrón in the Region of Murcia.
This is not the first time that the Region has been recognised by National Geographic. In recent years, the magazine has identified Moratalla as one of Spain's "rural treasures" and earlier this week, La Carolina beach in Aguilas as one of the top 25 "best" sandy beaches and coves in the country.
The magic of Mazarrón
National Geographic highlights the town's rich archaeological heritage and stunning natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for travellers. Mazarrón boasts 35 kilometres of coastline, offering visitors the chance to experience its diverse marine life and sample the local gastronomy, which is heavily influenced by the sea and the surrounding agriculture.
One of the must-see attractions in Mazarrón, according to the magazine, is the Gredas de Bolnuevo, a unique natural formation that has been shaped by the passage of time and the sea. The yellow-toned landscape is reminiscent of a desert, yet it’s located mere steps away from the beach. This Natural Monument of the Region of Murcia is not only breathtakingly beautiful but also holds significant scientific value due to the crustacean and mollusc fossils found in the clay.
Another notable attraction in Mazarrón is the Mars-like landscape of the abandoned Mazarrón mines. The abandoned machinery and buildings add to the surreal atmosphere of the place, making it a popular filming location for movies, shorts and music videos.
Outside of the Region of Murcia, other areas to make the list of must-see destinations include Ribadesella and Llanes, Las Villuercas (Cáceres), the Marina Alta of Alicante and La Garrotxa (Girona).
