ARCHIVED - Nerja takes important step towards opening sewage treatment plant
The council in Nerja, Malaga, has approved technical details over the water purification of the town’s sewage treatment plant in an important step for getting the plant up and running.
Following nearly three decades of delays over the opening of Nerja’s contentious sewage treatment plant, the council has finally approved the technical plans relating to the purification of the plant’s water required in order to hand the site over from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to the council.
Plans to create Nerja’s sewage treatment plant began in 1993 but problems including one of the companies building the plant going bust, have caused substantial delays to its opening, leaving Nerja the only large town on the Costa del Sol to pump untreated sewage out to sea on its coastline and racking up €50 million in EU fines over the environmental health issue.
