ARCHIVED - New Covid restrictions: Murcia suspends care home visits for two weeks
Elderly residents in the Region of Murcia will have to go without seeing family and friends for at least 15 days
Due to the record-breaking Covid figures in the Region of Murcia over the last few days and weeks, the Murcian authorities have decided to suspend all visits to care homes in an attempt to protect those who are more susceptible to the virus.
The new measure, which has also been approved by the Murcian Social Action Institute (IMAS), is going to be in place from this Wednesday January 12 for at least two weeks. After 15 days, the regional government will review the epidemiological data in Murcia and make a decision on the no-visitation rule.
In addition to preventing visits by family and friends, IMAS has also recommended that residents take turns while accessing common areas or avoid them altogether. The Institute also urged care homes to strictly enforce mask-wearing and social distancing for both staff members and residents.
Employees in residences for the elderly are expected to take periodic antigen tests – two per week for vaccinated staff and daily for unvaccinated staff – to safeguard residents.
This measure has been put in place as an added line of defence for vulnerable residents, aiming to prevent devastating Covid outbreaks in care homes, which are especially dangerous as the virus can cause life-threatening symptoms in older members of the population.
The current Covid restrictions in the Region, including those in place for the hospitality sector, are in effect until January 14, but the regional authorities have asked to extend all measures until February 4.
