New free car parks being built in Cartagena
The city will have new free parking spaces next to the Mandarache and La Rambla shopping centres
Cartagena City Council has approved the creation of two new car parks which between them will have more than 800 spaces for vehicles. They are to be located next to the Mandarache and La Rambla shopping centres in Cartagena city centre.Building these new car parks is part of the development of the CartaGo mobility plan, which also entails increasing the frequency of buses, and connecting workplaces with bike lanes and safe pedestrian routes. One of the parking lots will be in the Plaza de Severo Ochoa, next to the Conservatory of Music and the Mandarache shopping centre, and will have 120 parking spaces. The other car park will be on the esplanade of the La Rambla shopping centre, and will have 700 parking spaces. Both will have shaded parking spaces to keep cars cool in summer, and the roofs of these covered parking spots will have solar panels on them. There will also be charging points for electric vehicles and 24-hour CCTV. In addition, smart bike racks will be installed in both car parks, with about 20 spaces in each.According to the mayor of Cartagena, both parking areas should be ready to open in the second half of 2024.At the same time, the Council has also approved the construction project of a bicycle lane that will link the villages of Santa Ana and El Albujón, passing through Miranda. One and a half million euros will be invested in this project, which will take a year to complete. The future bike path will be about six kilometres long. It will run, for a large part of its route, parallel to the tree line of the old national highway 301 to Madrid so that cyclists can ride along in the shade.Image: Ayuntamiento de Cartagena
