New free entry times announced for Cartagena's top historical sites
Roman Theatre, Punic Wall, Castillo de la Concepción and Fuerte de la Navidad open for limited free hours
The Roman Theatre Foundation in Cartagena has extended free admission hours at several of its most popular attractions. As of October 1, 2024, visitors can now enjoy free access to the Roman Theatre Museum on Tuesdays during the final two hours of operation, depending on the season. From 1 October to 30 April, free hours will be from 4pm to 6pm, and from May 1 to September 30, from 6pm to 8pm. This new schedule aims to allow more people to explore Cartagena’s most-visited monument without a fee.This move follows calls for compliance with the regional Cultural Heritage Law, which requires cultural sites to offer free entry for four days each month. The Autonomous Community’s request prompted the Cartagena City Council to create specific time slots for free access.The Cartagena Puerto de Culturas Consortium has introduced a similar plan to broaden access to other key historical sites. As of July 23, 2024, the Punic Wall, Castillo de la Concepción castle and Roman Theatre will be free to visit during the last two opening hours every Tuesday. These times will vary by season to help manage visitor numbers and enhance accessibility.Additionally, the Fuerte de la Navidad ‘Christmas Fort’, a significant symbol of Cartagena’s military past, will be free to enter on Sundays during the last two hours of its operating schedule, providing local families and tourists an opportunity to enjoy this historic landmark at no cost.Details on these updated hours, ticket prices and free entry days are now available on the Cartagena Puerto de Culturas website and displayed at each site’s reception area.

Cartagena has a wealth of historical sites, including the Roman Theatre Museum, Archaeological Museum, ARQUA Subaquatic Archaeology Museum, Panoramic lift, Civil War Air raid Shelter and Military and Naval Museums, as well as Tourist Bus and Tourist Boat which ferries visitors across to the Fuerte de Navidad.
There is one main Tourist Information Office and 2 tourist information points, the main one being in the Muralla Púnica Interpretation centre in Calle de san Diego and the other next to the Civil War Air Raid Shelter and Panoramic lift.
The office in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the easiest place to pick up a map if you've come into the port from a cruise ship, and has a few basic
leaflets, but not a lot else.The information point for the Puerto de Culturas attractions is by the Panoramic lift and Civil War Air Raid shelter in Calle Gisbert, although maps and leaflets are available at any of 3 information points.
