New guided tours through the amazing Neolithic caves in Alicante
Alicante’s Cova de L’Or is considered one of the most important Neolithic sites
Alicante council has opened up a new access route through the Cova de L’Or cave in Beniarrés, widely considered to be “one of the most emblematic examples” of the Neolithic era. In addition, new guided tours have been added so that visitors can explore even more of this archaeological enclave.
The MARQ Foundation in Alicante manages the site and the next phase of development is to install a museum in the ‘Room of the Columns’. This means that visitors to the caves will have 32 more metres of historic space to investigate and the experts will have an opportunity to provide even more information on the importance of site to members of the public.
Cova de L'Or was first opened to the public just two years ago and the new guided tours, run by the museum in collaboration with the Beniarrés City Council, will begin in the Interpretation Centre right at the heart of the municipality.
The council explained that the site is “fundamental” to understanding the Neolithic people of the Mediterranean and gives visitors a unique opportunity to "enjoy the environmental and landscape heritage" of the surroundings of the Benicadell mountain range.
Since opening, more than 2,000 people have visited the caves but access to both the Interpretation Centre and the Cova de l'Or is limited to the MARQ organised tours so as to conserve and protect the historical legacy of the site. Free visits are not authorised without prior arrangement, and the maximum capacity is 15 people per pass.
From the Interpretation Centre visitors are taken by car to the path which leads to the cave.
Reservations can be made through the MARQ website and the price is three euros for schoolchildren and five euros for everyone else. The current schedule is Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 2pm.
