Date Published: 27/11/2023ARCHIVED ARTICLE -New Mercadona opens in La Rambla shopping centre, Cartagena
The opening could be the start of a new golden era for La Rambla
A little over 4 years since the Eroski supermarket and other shops in Cartagena’s La Rambla shopping centre closed down, the facilities have now thrown open their doors once again with the opening of a new Mercadona. It comes as the Mercadona on Calle Ramón y Cajal shuts for good, and at the same time as an announcement from Cartagena City Council that a new car park would soon be built nearby.Businessman Tomás Olivo, who built the La Rambla complex in the 1980s and repurchased it in 2019, is back in business while waiting for other businesses to arrive and give life to the 50,000 square metres of shopping centre here. The place was used as the mass vaccination centre for Covid-19 shots during the pandemic, and the old-new owner Tomás Olivo has long-term plans to build residential properties there too.More than a year and a half ago, the developer obtained the license to build the first building of the ‘Plan Rambla’, located between Cartagonova and the Sports Palace, but so far nothing else has happened in that regard. The intention is for the shopping center to have more DIY, clothing, footwear and accessories stores and maybe even a gym.As yet the City Council has not received any requests for opening licences by any other businesses, but it is hoped that the opening of the new Mercadona here will be the start of a second life for the shopping centre and the area of Cartagena West in general.Mercadona La Rambla opening times
