New pilgrimage and walking route to Caravaca begins in Puerto de Mazarron
The Camino del Mediterráneo covers a distance of 130 kilometres from Mazarrón to Caravaca de la Cruz
The Town Hall of Mazarrón has signed a collaboration agreement with the regional tourist board of Murcia (ITREM) to create and promote the "Camino del Mediterráneo" as one of the variants on the already existing pilgrimage and walking routes leading to Caravaca de la Cruz.
It should be remembered that these routes will be especially popular in 2024 as this marks the latest 7-yearly Holy Jubilee in Caravaca, the status of Holy City having been awarded by Pope John Paul II in 1998, and the ITREM is keen to add to the existing pilgrimage walking routes in the Region of Murcia such as the Camino de Levante.
However, the creation and maintenance of these routes is not of benefit only every seventh year, and Ginés Campillo, the Mayor of Mazarrón, stresses that it will be important for the tourism sector of the municipality as well as broadening its cultural and natural heritage. Councillor Andrés Aznar adds that he is certain the route will attract visitors wishing to explore the natural environment along the coast of this part of south-eastern Spain.
The new route will set out from two starting points, one in Cartagena and the other in Puerto de Mazarrón, and these will meet in La Pinilla before joining already established routes on the way to the north-west of the Region. In all it includes 8 municipalities - Cartagena, Fuente Álamo, Mazarrón, Alhama de Murcia, Totana, Aledo, Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz – and the total walking distance is around 130 kilometres from Puerto de Mazarrón and 145 kilometres from Cartagena.
