New self-employed contribution system for 2023 in Spain
Self-employed workers in Spain will be able to change the amount of Social Security they pay every two months
There are big changes to the self-employed Social Security contribution system in Spain from January 1, 2023 which aim to offer better protection and allow business owners to alter how much they pay depending on their work activity. Here are the most important changes:
Flat rate for the newly self-employed
Anyone who registers as self-employed, or autónomo as it’s known in Spanish, between 2023 and 2025 will pay a flat rate of 80 euros per month Social Security for the first 12 months. Anyone who is currently entitled to a discount will continue to enjoy this benefit.
In addition, after the first 12 months, the newly self-employed who forecast that they will earn less that 14,000 the following year will be able to apply for a reduced quota of 160 euros during the next 36 months.
People who have not been registered in the two years immediately prior to a new self-employment application, or three years if they have previously been on the reduced rate, can also benefit from the new scheme.
Changing contribution bases
For those business owners whose income fluctuates, the new regulations will allow self-employed people to select a new contribution base every two months, which will alter their Social Security payments depending on their net income.
This modification will be effective on the following dates:
- March 1, 2023: if the request is made between January 1 and the last calendar day of February.
- May 1, 2023: if the request is made between March 1 and April 30.
- July 1, 2023: if the request is made between May 1 and June 30.
- September 1, 2023: if the request is made between July 1 and August 31.
- November 1, 2023: if the request is made between September 1 and October 31.
- January 1, 2024: if the request is made between November 1 and December 31.
New payment calculator
To avoid any surprises, a new online quota calculator will be available to business owners that will estimate payments based on the net income level that the self-employed person has forecast.
