ARCHIVED - New Via Verde greenway along Cieza Floracion path to be completed by summer 2023
A new 10km hiking and cycling route is being built along the old Calasparra-Cieza railtrack
Work on the new Vía Verde greenway of the Floración de Cieza, which began in November, is progressing at a good pace, according to the Murcia Regional Government, and is currently in the phase of “conditioning and consolidation of the road surface”.
The Regional authorities have been reclaiming this new ten-kilometer route, having removed the defunct section of railway track that linked Calasparra and Cieza up until 2019.
Now, the aim is to make a greenway that will be included as part of the Murcia ‘Red de Vías Verdes’ Greenway Network, which currently includes the walking and cycling routes of the Northwest, Campo de Cartagena, Mazarrón, Embarcadero de El Hornillo in Águilas, Almendricos, Chicharra Cieza and Chicharra Yecla, which total a route of more than 170 kilometres.
The objective of the Community with this new Cieza route is to enhance the spaces available for “active tourism”, where runners, walkers and cyclists can come into contact with nature, most significantly the Floración, the flowering of the peach and nectarine blossoms for which Cieza is so famous in spring.
The project being developed in Cieza will also include the installation of a crossing over the Galán ravine, a drainage system, signage, shelters along the path and rest areas, not to mention the planting of 500 trees that are native to the area.
It should take another six months or so to complete the work, which has a budget of 781,781 euros, of which 80% comes from European Regional Development Funds. The rest comes from the own funds of the Ministry of Presidency, Tourism, Culture and Sports, through the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia (Itrem).
