ARCHIVED - No milk, meat or fruit: This is what the new Carrefour 30 items for 30 euros deal really contains
The promotion aims to offer more value for money in Spain, but is it really a good deal?

Every little helps, as one popular British slogan goes, but Carrefour’s new promotion of a basket of 30 products for 30 euros is coming under some heavy scrutiny. The move is a result of the Spanish vice president’s plan to reduce the price of some staple food items, with the supermarket chain’s aim to offer “savings solutions that protect purchasing power of families in Spain”.
The price of groceries and household items has soared in line with inflation in recent months, which itself has reached its highest rate in 38 years. And while the multinational’s discount shopping basket sounds good in theory, is it really offering customers value for money?
Well for starters, the promotional basket doesn’t contain any fresh meat, fish or fruit, which would naturally push up the cost significantly from 30 euros, but the usual staples for most families like eggs and milk are also absent. Upon meeting with Carrefour representatives last week, Yolanda Díaz pointed this out, asking the chain to create “an affordable and quality shopping basket” that contains more protein and fresh produce, as well as an offer suitable for coeliacs.
What the basket does contain is plenty of shelf-stable, own-brand items like a one-litre bottle of sunflower oil, which retails in Carrefour for 2.54 euros, a kilo of sea salt, one kilo of flour and a litre bottle of white wine vinegar.
All very useful products, certainly, but hardly ones that would need replacing on a weekly basis, which suggests that most households won’t really get value for money more than once.
In addition, there’s no shortage of preserves and pasta: each basket contains a 500-gram pack of vegetable spirals; a 250-gram jar of peas; a 415-gram can of meatballs; another of tuna, 143 grams; a 225-gram jar of piquillo peppers; 285-gram sweet corn; and a one-litre carton of chicken broth.
A 230-gram pack of sliced mushrooms, costing 1.06 euros, gives a nod to fresh vegetables.
The offer also has plenty of cereal, some juice, bread, biscuits, chocolate, coffee, tea and jam.
As for cleaning products, it contains bleach, glass cleaner, washing-up liquid, and 30-wash laundry detergent. For personal hygiene, there is a one-litre bottle of shower gel; a 12-roll pack of toilet paper; a pack of sanitary towels and a tube of toothpaste.
