ARCHIVED - Off-duty lifeguard rescues three bathers in La Manga
One of the three swimmers was reportedly unconscious when rescued in the Mediterranean off the La Manga coastline.
Three lucky bathers were rescued by an off-duty lifeguard last night (July 13) at around 9.30 pm after getting into difficulties due to the strong currents at Km 2 of the Gran Vía de la Manga, in Cartagena.
During the day 11 beaches flew the red flag warning bathers of potential danger due to the strong coastal winds.
One of the three rescued, a 25-year-old man, was unconscious when the off-duty lifeguard pulled him from the water, according to sources from the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre, and required resuscitation. Medical staff arriving at the scene continued the process using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The incident occurred after the surveillance post had closed, however, the lifeguard lived close to the area and after receiving a call from a local, immediately made his way down to the beach.
Medical staff from a Mobile Emergency Unit 061 stabilised the man before moving him to the Hospital Santa Lucia de Cartagena for further treatment.
