Official: The Alcampo in Murcia is one of the cheapest shops in all of Spain
The Murcia supermarket comes out as one of the best places to shop in the whole country
What’s the cheapest place to do your weekly shop? That’s the question on many lips as the cost of your average shopping basket continues to rise in Spain.
Well, for people in Murcia there is a ray of hope as a supermarket in the Region has been ranked as almost the cheapest in the whole country according to a report by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU).
The study analysed 1,070 establishments in 65 Spanish cities, including all provincial capitals and other large towns.
The Alcampo in Murcia city comes in third place in the ranking of the most affordable supermarkets in Spain, only surpassed by the Alcampos in Barcelona’s Diagonal and in the Galician city of Vigo.
Even if you’re buying leading brand goods and not white label, Murcia comes out on top with the lowest prices overall.
The OCU report highlights that the majority of the large national supermarket chains have experienced a rise in prices similar to the CPI of 3.4%, with fresh foods increasing the most, with an average increase of 4.1%. Packaged products from leading brands have also seen an average price increase of 3.8%, while white labels have seen a more moderate rise of 2.8%.
The OCU also points out that it is becoming increasingly common to find supermarkets only selling their own brand of products and, on occasion, the market leader brand, which limits the variety of choice for consumers.
