ARCHIVED - Olive oil production in Spain being threatened by heatwaves
The price of olive oil will increase globally due to decreased supply by the world’s biggest exporter, Spain
The series of extreme heatwaves and a lack of rain in Spain mean that this year’s production of olive oil from the world’s top exporter is due to fall drastically.
The Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, said in an interview with Bloomberg News that, “If there is no temperature relief or rains in the coming weeks, this year’s olive harvest could be notably lower than previous ones.”
Spain produces almost half of all the olive oil in the world, and the decrease in production due to extreme weather conditions – combined with disruption to the supply of sunflower oil from Ukraine – means that the price of vegetable oils will remain high, according to Planas.
The International Olive Council has reported that the price of refined olive oil in Jaén, in Spain’s southern Andalusia region rose by 8.3% in June of this year, compared to the same month last year, up to 327 euros per 100kg.
At the same time, inflation of over 10% means that the average cost of living in Spain and the price of most foodstuffs in supermarkets have risen drastically.
