ARCHIVED - Omicron vaccine developed by Pfizer set to be ready by March
The new drug will offer more protection against the Omicron Covid strain
Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer announced this week that it is set to hit its target of having a new Covid-19 vaccine ready for market in March which provides additional protection against the Omicron variant. The US company confirmed late last year that clinical tests showed a double dose of its jab was not completely effective against the new strain, and so they have already begun manufacturing the specially-designed drug.
“The hope is that we will achieve something that has much better protection, particularly against infections, because protection against hospitalisations and serious illness right now is reasonable with current vaccines, as long as the third dose has been administered,” Pfizer’s CEO said on Monday January 10.
While it is not yet known if a fourth booster will actually be required, Moderna is not to be left behind and plans to have its vaccine, which is specifically designed to combat the Omicron variant, ready by the autumn. The biotech company has already closed deals worth 18.5 billion dollars with the United Kingdom, South Korea and Switzerland for the new drug.
Despite the fact that the big pharma companies are pushing ahead with the new vaccines, the World Health Organisation has heavily criticised countries for administering a fourth jab when a huge proportion of the population remains completely unvaccinated.
Moderna has acknowledged that the current problem doesn’t lie with producing enough vaccinations, but rather in distributing doses to developing nations. To contribute to global immunisation, last November the company sent between 50 and 100 million vaccines to low-income countries.
