One dead and 27 injured after bus full of British tourists crashes in Canary Islands
The tourist coach was carrying British passengers when it plunged down a ten-metre embankment on the GM-2 highway this Friday afternoon
One person has died and 27 others have been injured, at least three of them seriously, after a tourist bus left the road and plunged down an embankment in San Sebastián de La Gomera, in Spain’s Canary Islands.
The incident occurred shortly after 1.15pm on Friday April 10, with the Directorate General of Traffic confirming that the crash took place at kilometre 4.5 of the GM-2 highway as the vehicle was travelling towards San Sebastián de La Gomera.
According to reports, the coach, which was carrying 27 British tourists along with the driver, fell approximately 10 metres after leaving the road on a curve.
All 28 occupants suffered injuries of varying severity. The 27 injured passengers were taken to the island’s Hospital Insular, with at least three reported to be in serious condition. Two of those seriously injured were later airlifted to Tenerife for further treatment.
Emergency services responded with significant resources, including two helicopters, one from the Canary Islands Emergency Service and another from the Emergency and Rescue Group, as well as multiple ambulances equipped for medical transport.
Health officials have since confirmed that the driver is the most seriously injured, with his condition described as guarded in hospital in Tenerife. Two other seriously injured patients are also being treated there and are said to be recovering well. Meanwhile, three passengers being treated in La Gomera are expected to be discharged shortly, including a couple who are being kept together for emotional support.
Officials confirmed that the man who died lost his life at the scene. His body remained there under police supervision until the necessary legal procedures were completed and his wife was informed.
She has since been discharged from hospital and is staying in a hotel with the other passengers, where she is receiving psychological support.
All other passengers are also being accommodated locally in San Sebastián de La Gomera, where they are undergoing ongoing medical checks and receiving emotional support before returning home. The British consulate is assisting those affected.
Following the incident, the Canary Islands Government activated a mass casualty alert under its civil protection emergency plan.
The crash comes almost a year after another fatal bus accident on the same GM-2 highway. On May 13, 2025, a 73-year-old woman died and 11 others were injured when a bus overturned near the site of this latest incident.
La Gomera, one of the Canary Islands, is known for its rugged terrain and natural landscapes, including the Garajonay National Park.
