ARCHIVED - One dead following nuclear power plant leak in Catalonia
Three others were injured in the industrial accident in Tarragona, Spain
One person has died and three others suffered injuries following a leak at the Asco nuclear power plant in Tarragona on Wednesday November 24.
According to local firefighters, the incident occurred during routine maintenance and the spill was “not linked to radiological activity”. The workers were attending to the plant’s fire-fighting system at the time, which works on CO2, and the emergency personnel and staff worked quickly to restore the security of the premises.
Explaining how the situation evolved, a spokesperson for the Bombers de la Generalitat stated that “at the moment in which the ignition occurs, the CO2 begins to leave and displace the oxygen, and once there is no oxygen, the combustion ends. This is the way to put out fires in places where water cannot be used.”
