ARCHIVED - Operation Easter Exit 2022 gets underway in Spain
A mass exodus of 14.3 million vehicles is predicted this weekend in Spain as people head away for a mini-break

The first major holiday of the year is almost upon us and this Friday April 8, once schools let out and work finishes, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) expects some 3.7 million cars to hit the road to undertake long-distance journeys before Easter.
During the entirety of Holy Week, the DGT forecasts that there will be 14.6 million trips throughout Spain, which is still 2.1% fewer than before the pandemic hit in 2019.
The ensure the maximum safety for road users during this busy period, Traffic authorities will increase the number of checkpoints across the country, which will monitor motorists for everything from drink and drug driving to correct seatbelt and mobile phone use.

This is all part of the DGT’s new road safety campaign, which features a shocking video in which people purporting to be recently deceased quote the latest road fatality statistics.
Officers will be particularly out in force during the busiest times, and the additional surveillance will begin at 3pm on Friday April 8, the first phase, and end just before midnight on Monday April 18.
The exit operation will be carried out in two phases, which will coincide with the days when the greatest number of trips are expected. The second phase will start on Wednesday April 13, except in Catalonia, which will start the following day.
