ARCHIVED - Orange weather warning for central Spain and Costa Blanca on Wednesday
Storms bring precipitation and extreme flooding, but should improve by the end of the week
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across the whole of central Spain today, with the worst hit regions expected to be the northern Valencia region, which has been hard hit already this week, and the northern part of the Murcia region.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has also issued orange alerts for Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha and parts of Aragón and Navarra in the central northeast, while there are yellow warnings for other regions including Murcia and parts of Cataluña, among others.
For the orange alert areas, Aemet warns there could be up to 30mm of rainfall in an hour, lasting up to midnight. As of Thursday September 2, the worst of the storms will pass, with the orange weather warning remaining only in the north of the Valencia region and part of Navarra. By Friday, there will only be a yellow-level alert for isolated areas in northern Spain on the border with France.
Andalucía and the Balearic Islands are not currently on weather warnings, but there will still be light rainfall as the weather front travels across the country. Residents in at-risk areas are advised to take care when driving and going out as there is a high chance of flooding. Madrid capital and large parts of the Valencia region have already seen intense damage due to flooding, and with this continuing stormfront there is likely to be more in the coming days.
