Ouigo axes train services between Murcia and Madrid until February
On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, only one train will run between Murcia and the Spanish capital
Just weeks after launching a massive promotion of one-euro tickets to entice more travellers to take the high-speed train from Murcia to Madrid, French rail company Ouigo has announced that it will be drastically reducing this service until the end of February.
Between January 8 and February 26, “for operational reasons”, only one daily service will run between the Region and the Spanish capital on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, instead of the usual two.
The service that will be cancelled on the high-speed Madrid-Elche-Murcia line will be the 8.15am train, which leaves for Murcia from the Madrid station of Chamartín-Clara Campoamor, and the service that leaves Murcia at 12.39pm.
According to Ouigo, they have been “forced” to axe certain connections and this has already been communicated to any passengers who may have purchased their tickets in advance.
Company sources indicated that “all users have been given the possibility of changing the date of their ticket free of charge.” In addition, Ouigo says it is committed to fully refunding the amount paid for tickets to those who do not wish to change the date of their trip.
The services that leave Murcia for Madrid at 8.39pm and from the capital of Spain to the El Carmen station at 4.15pm will be maintained. The company stresses the temporary nature of this reduction in service and advances that, from February 27, the services that will be interrupted from January 8 will be resumed.
Ouigo landed in Murcia last September and offers, at affordable prices, connections to Madrid in just under three hours with a journey that makes stops in Elche and Albacete.
Apart from the French company, Renfe also offers a high-speed service from El Carmen station with four trains a day.
Likewise, Avlo, Renfe's low-cost operator, offers passengers a daily round-trip service between Murcia and Madrid, and is also known for offering cheap tickets.
