ARCHIVED - Pandemic rebounds with new variants: Spain Covid update June 22
Covid-related hospitalisations in Spain have reached their highest level since February
Spain enters the summer season with a strong resurgence in coronavirus infections, recording this week the highest number of hospital admissions of the last four months. The incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has experienced four consecutive increases, although this still varies widely across the different regions.
Covid experts are blaming the dreaded rebound on the new Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5 which were a little late arriving in Spain but now represent up to 64.9% of all samples. In its latest report, the Ministry of Health assured that the new strains don’t appear to be any more severe than the original Omicron, but have displayed “a greater immune escape,” meaning that vaccines are far less effective.
The impact of the variant in a short period of time is quite startling. Two weeks ago, the cumulative incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants had dipped to 586 cases, now it stands at 653, and the 7-day figure is also rapidly increasing, indicating that more infections are likely. Similarly, on June 7, just 3.62% of ICU beds were occupied by coronavirus patients; this has snowballed to 4.07%.
Coronavirus infections
In the latest health update published by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday June 21, 50,235 new cases of coronavirus were registered, of which 23,706 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of infections since the start of the health crisis to 12,613,634.
Cumulative incidence rate
In just four days, the 14-day incidence rate has increased by 40 points to stand at 653.25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The incidence in Andalucía continues to drop, reaching 220.27 cases per 100,000 inhabitants this week and remains the lowest in the country, followed by the Region of Murcia (429.20) and the Valencian Community (441.69).
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Covid-related hospitalisations have this week reached their highest level since February: there are currently 7,793 patients admitted throughout Spain (compared to 6,763 a week ago) while 361 people are being treated for more serious symptoms in the country’s ICUs (up from 342).
With these figures, 6.64% of all hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients.
By autonomous community, the highest hospital occupancy is found in Madrid (10.99%), which coincidentally also has the highest cumulative incidence rate, followed by Castilla-La Mancha (9.61%), the Basque Country (7.59%), Catalonia (7%) and Castilla y Leon (6.89%). All of these regions are above the national average.
Vaccination data
As of Friday June 17, a total of 39,094,061 people over the age of 12, representing 92.7% of the population, are double jabbed while 39,237,978 people (93%) have received at least one dose.
