ARCHIVED - Paraglider pilot injured in Alhama de Murcia
The Sierra de la Muela is a popular flying hill amongst paragliding enthusiasts
A 44-year-old paraglider was injured on Wednesday afternoon after suffering a fall in the Sierra de la Muela, in Alhama de Murcia.
This hill is extremely popular with paragliding enthusiasts, offering a safe take-off area and good thermals.
Unfortunately, although serious accidents are rare, there is an inherent risk with this sport as chutes can collapse, bad landings can occur and adverse weather conditions can create additional danger where even the most experienced of pilots can find themselves in trouble.
In this case the pilot is reported as having suffered a fall, and was transferred to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia with severe back and leg pain.
The 112 Emergency Coordination Center of the Region was notified of the incident at 19:27. Patrols from the Local Police and Civil Guard, firefighters from the Murcia Region Fire Extinction and Rescue Consortium, an Environmental Agent and a Mobile Emergency Unit from the Urgencies and Health Emergencies Management 061, all attended the callout.
