ARCHIVED - Paragliding immigrant crosses the border from Morocco into Spain
It’s the first time this inventive method has been used for illegal entry to Spain
For the first time ever, a migrant has managed to illegally cross the border into Spain from Morocco on a paraglider. The undocumented individual traversed the double fence separating the two countries and accessed the Spanish city of Melilla.
A spokesperson for the Spanish government reported that, at “around 6.15 pm this afternoon (Thursday December 1), two citizens who were driving along the ring road have notified the security operation center (COS) of the Guardia Civil Command of the entrance of a migrant in a paraglider in the vicinity of the Nano River.”
The incident will do little for Spain’s global image, which is currently being dragged over the coals for the police force’s intervention in the so-called Melilla massacre, a mass storming of the same border which resulted in the deaths of 23 migrants.
The nationality of the paraglider is currently unknown and officials believe he would have fled into the Spanish countryside to avoid capture and a subsequent return to his country of origin. Despite the fact that several Guardia Civil patrols were quickly on the scene, “they have not been able to locate the migrant,” the spokesperson confirmed.
