ARCHIVED - Paxlovid Covid medication arrives in Spain
Pfizer’s oral mediation is expected to drastically reduce hospitalisations in Spain
Spain has received 11,905 doses of Pfizer’s new antiviral oral drug, Paxlovid, on Monday March 28 to join vaccinations in the country’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The drugs which have arrived so far have already been distributed across several autonomous communities.
Paxlovid is an antiviral medicine that is administered orally and was “conditionally” authorised by the European Commission on January 28. It is a combination of the active ingredients of nirmatrelvir (150 mg each tablet, pink) and ritonavir (100 mg each tablet, white).

In total, Spain will receive 344,000 treatments of Paxlovid during 2022. In the first quarter of the year a total of 50,000 treatments will be distributed among the autonomous communities: in the second quarter, 90,000 treatments; in the third, 100,000 doses, and in the fourth, 104,000.
According to the Ministry of Health, the medication will be administered by hospitals on an outpatient basis and is designed to prevent mild coronavirus from developing into a more serious illness; in fact, Pfizer claims that the drug is 89% effective in preventing hospitalisations when used as directed.
“It will allow us to have one more tool in the fight against Covid,” Spain’s Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, said.
