A 53-year-old Spanish man went to extreme lengths to avoid paying a bar bill in Malaga city centre, pretending to be choking rather than stump up 29 euros for drinks.
At around 8pm on Sunday January 30, the National Police received a call from a doctor requesting police presence at an establishment in Calle Morino Lario in the city centre.
The doctor explained that staff at the bar had reported a man who was displaying "signs of asphyxiation" but when the medical team arrived the middle-aged man – who minutes earlier could not breathe – became verbally abusive and even tried to get into the ambulance to attack health personnel.
Medics and bar staff soon realised the whole episode had been a ruse to get out of paying his tab, but the penny-pinching customer's violent outbursts continued when the police arrived and he tried to resist arrest.
He was eventually cuffed and charged with assault against law enforcement officers.
