ARCHIVED - Petrol prices plummet in Spain but fuel is still 46 per cent more expensive than last year
Petrol and diesel prices in Spain are also well above the European average
The cost of petrol and diesel across Spain has dropped for the seventh consecutive week, reducing by more than 12% since the end of June and ending an upward trend that seemed unstoppable from the day that Russia invaded Ukraine.
On August 11, the European Union Oil Bulletin set a litre of petrol in Spain at 1.86 euros, which is a drop of 2.2% compared to last Wednesday. With regard to diesel, the average price of a litre has fallen by 2.06%, to 1.8543 euros-the lowest price it has seen since May 30.
Even when the government’s 20 cent per litre subsidy is taken into account, fuel prices in Spain are still extortionate when you consider what we were paying this time last year. In August of 2021, petrol was a whopping 31% cheaper while the cost of diesel has increased by an incredible 46%.
With today’s prices, filling an average 55-litre tank with petrol or diesel will set you back just over 90 euros, taking the bonus system into account.
Until recently, Spain was known as one of the cheapest countries in Europe to fill up, but this is now a distant memory; the price of unleaded 95 is well above both the EU and eurozone average.
The most expensive nation for petrol currently is Finland (2.164 euros per litre) while Hungary is the cheapest, at just 1.313 euros. Sweden is the priciest for diesel, at 2.233 euros per litre and you’ll get the biggest bang for buck in Malta, where each litre costs just 1.210 euros.
