Petrol prices shoot up in Spain for the seventh week in a row

If you’re thinking about filling up your car in the next few days you might have to dig a bit deeper into your pockets because the price of fuel has risen for the seventh consecutive week. This means that both petrol and diesel are more than 5% more expensive than the middle of December when this upward spiral began, which looks set to continue.
The average price of a litre of petrol has reached 1.579 euros, after rising by 0.5% compared to the previous week, reaching its highest cost since mid-August.
Diesel has also jumped up by 0.6% in a week and currently stands at 1.508 euros per litre, a price we haven’t seen since last May. But this is only the beginning, as the EU is insisting that Spain bring diesel prices more in line with petrol before the end of February.
With these latest increases, filling an average 55-litre tank of diesel costs around 82.94 euros, 1.16 euros more than at the same time last year, when it was around 81.78 euros.
However, for petrol cars, filling an average tank will set you back around 86.8 euros, which is an incredible 2.20 euros more than in the same week in 2024, when the price was 84.59 euros.
But even if we’re feeling the pinch, it’s important to remember that both fuels are still far from the highs recorded in the summer of 2022, in July, when petrol reached a staggering 2.141 euros and diesel 2.10 euros.
What’s more, the price of 95% unleaded petrol in Spain remains below the average for the European Union, where it’s currently 1.707 euros per litre.
