The Action Plan will offer Cartagena youngsters an alternative nightlife spot and give local residents some peace
Illegal street parties and gatherings of youngsters is a problem that has been plaguing the residents of Cabo de Palos for years, who have long petitioned for a solution to the excessive noise and the debris left in the neighbourhood following these get-togethers.Last month, locals sent a letter to the Cartagena City Council containing 2,200 signatures demanding action, and it seems that their prayers have finally been answered. On Thursday November 24, it was unanimously agreed that the local authorities would draw up an Action Plan aimed at taking these parties off the streets, while offering young people an alternative venue to meet.According to the Council, this plan will extend far beyond Cabo de Palos and can be applied to minimise the problem in all of the popular tourist spots in Cartagena, where the population naturally increases during the summer. At the meeting, councillor Leli García said that "this action plan, which will have to be provided with the appropriate budget, could begin to be designed right now, in collaboration with the technicians of the different departments involved, for its implementation next summer, seeking a nightlife alternative to large parties in residential areas that enforces the noise ordinance and also increases the cleaning and waste collection service, as well as the number of local police officers."To get the plan underway, a working group will be created shortly; the UPCT will carry out a study that will be presented to the affected locals and the youth of Cartagena, and a number of proposals will be tabled. The plan coincides with the redevelopment of the Las Dunas commercial centre, a huge undertaking that will give Cabo de Palos a much-needed facelift and dramatically increase the amenities available to residents.Last week, Mercadona announced that it would be opening its largest store in Spain in the new shopping centre.Image: Archive
