Planes diverted, trains halted and drivers warned not to travel in Spain due to UK Storm Ciaran
This is the impact of Storm Ciarán in Spain this Thursday
Trains have been cancelled, planes to Madrid have had to be diverted, drivers are being warned not to take their vehicles out unless absolutely necessary and one person has died as a result of Storm Ciarán in Spain.
Heavy rain and gusts of wind of up to 140 kilometres per hour have been recorded in parts of the north of the country, and waves of up to 10 metres high are expected on the Atlantic coast.
Parks in the capital Madrid have been temporarily closed due to the risk of falling branches. A 23-year-old woman died this afternoon in Madrid due to a falling tree, as confirmed by Emergencias Madrid.
A flight that was travelling from Lanzarote – one of the few places in Spain that is not on alert for extreme weather – to Santiago de Compostela had to be diverted to Seville airport.
In total, airport management company Aena has reported 46 flight diversions or cancellations, including 8 cancellations and 1 diversion in Madrid; 13 cancellations in Bilbao; 4 in San Sebastián; 3 in Asturias; 4 in Barcelona; and 4 diversions in Valencia, among others.
Ciarán is coming from the United Kingdom, where waves have been recorded that leapt above cars, and in France, the strongest winds in decades are being registered, approaching 200kmh.
In Spain’s northern region of Galicia, for example, trains have had to be suspended between Ourense and Vigo and between A Coruña and Ferrol. Renfe has stated that due to the current situation and the forecast of strong gusts of wind, they have proceeded to modify their services this Thursday.
The company has provided an alternative road transport service, although the emergency services of other autonomous communities, such as 112 Emergencias Andalucía, have advised motorists not to drive at all unless absolutely necessary.
