Playa Flamenca Today
Your complete guide to one of the Orihuela Costa’s most popular locales
Playa Flamenca is a hugely popular coastal haven perfectly positioned along the azure Mediterranean Sea in the province of Alicante. Embodying laidback living and warm hospitality, this vibrant Orihuela Costa resort town is one of the most sought-after areas by second home owners and holidaymakers.
Location and history
Playa Flamenca lies on the eastern coastline of the Mediterranean Sea, just 4 kilometres south of Torrevieja, and covers 2.4 square kilometres of prime beachfront property.
Belonging to the jurisdiction of the Orihuela City Council, the town borders La Zenia to the south and to the west with the town of Villamartín.
To the northeast there is a natural area that extends 1.2 kilometres in the direction of the Punta Prima resort.
Its rich history begins in 1972, when a group of Dutch expats recognised its untapped potential and transformed it from a desolate, rocky terrain into a flourishing holiday retreat. Today, this coastal jewel attracts countless international homeowners seeking a slice of the serene Mediterranean lifestyle.
Summertime sees refreshing sea breezes, while winter days remain moderate and pleasant. Divided by the N-332 dual carriageway, the coastal side hosts stunning white-sanded beaches, while the interior parts accommodate low-rise homes and abundant amenities.
Playa Flamenca boasts three stunning beaches – Cala La Mosca, Cala La Estaca and the less developed Cala Cabo Peñas, guaranteeing pristine waters, soft sands and protection from rough tides. Picturesque promenades run parallel to the coast, lined with parks, kid-friendly attractions and restaurants and seamlessly connecting Playa Flamenca with other parts of the Orihuela Costa, such as Cabo Roig and Campoamor.
Occupying 90% of the district, Playa Flamenca's inland stretch is packed with amenities like commercial centres, household stores, supermarkets and bars. There’s also a huge variety of housing to suit all budgets and tastes, from seaview apartments to beautifully landscaped duplexes.
Services & Activities
Enjoying a Mediterranean climate, Playa Flamenca caters to outdoor leisure with ease. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the tennis courts, football fields and fitness centres, whereas food fanatics can indulge in tapas tours, fresh seafood and delicious local wine.
Playa Flamenca enjoys a Mediterranean microclimate, characterised by its low rainfall and an average of 325 days of sunshine per year with an average annual temperature of 19.5°C.
Long, hot summers and short, dry winters are common to this area of the Costa Blanca. From June to September, temperatures range around 25°C at night and 35°C during the day.
One of the area's best attractions is the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, one of the largest in Spain and a veritable retail wonderland, while other conveniences like Mercadona, Lidl and Carrefour are all within easy walking distance.
Keep busy with a vast assortment of recreation, entertainment and relaxation venues, from boat cruises and sailing schools to cycling paths, a go-kart track and fishing spots.
For those looking for a quiet place and green areas, the golf courses of Villamartín, Las Ramblas and the Real Club de Campoamor resort are less than 15 minutes away by car.
Getting there and moving around
Playa Flamenca boasts fantastic transportation links, with quick access to Alicante-Elche and Murcia's Corvera airports, as well as major roads like the N-332 and AP-7. Bus lines provide daily connections to Torrevieja and surrounding cities, and bicycles serve as a popular mode of transport among locals and tourists.
Community Living
In the melting pot that is Playa Flamenca you'll find a multicultural blend of residents from all over the world, but the area is especially popular with travellers from the UK and Ireland.
Whether you dream of investing in property, embarking on a relaxing escape or settling in a tranquil retirement locale, allow Playa Flamenca to welcome you with open arms.
