Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Cartagena
The Plaza del Ayuntamiento in Cartagena is the home of the Palacio Consistorial or Town Hall
Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Cartagena
The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the paved area in front of the Casa Consistorial, or Palacio Consistorial, which occupies the role of town hall, although much of the administrative work of the city is undertaken elsewhere.
The modernist building was originally completed in 1907 by architect Tomás Rico, but suffered structural deficiencies, due to the fact that it was built upon land reclaimed from the sea. The area was subject to flooding until the port area was consolidated and ramblas and water control systems fortified.
The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is frequently the location for concerts and cultural activities, with a stage area erected in front of the Palacio Consistorial for this purpose. There are also 2 exhibition halls inside the building.
The bottom corner of the building facing towards the port is the location of the Tourist Information Point, from where maps can be picked up along with leaflets and basic information about Cartagena's tourist attractions.
The Palacio Consistorial is also opposite the Roman Theatre Museum, Cartagena's main tourist attraction.
There are 2 underground carparking locations within a minutes walk of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, beneath the port area and in Calle Real. Click Cartagena parking.
Those with high topped vehicles or Camper vans must expect a good 5 minute walk to reach the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
