ARCHIVED - Police come under fire during third night of riots in La Linea
One police vehicle has been shot at during the riots in La Linea, Cadiz, in Andalucia region.
Following ongoing protests since the deaths of two suspected drugs runners on Monday, May 10, police are warning of increased violence on the streets, with one armoured vehicle even being shot at.
The protests began after residents in the deprived areas of La Atunara and San Bernardo in La Linea accused the authorities of not doing enough to save the lives of two local men who died when their suspected drugs boat ran into trouble on Monday.
Since then, growing tensions between locals and the police have seen three nights of riots, with protestors throwing missiles at officers from the National Police, burning buildings and vandalising public areas.
Last night on Calle Virgen de Loreto, a bullet hit the front window of a police Prevention and reaction Unit vehicle, smashing its protection grid.
Officers are now waiting for the results of a ballistics report but say the bullet may have been shot from a crossbow.
Meanwhile, in San Bernardo, rioters have used flares and Molotov cocktails to attack police, forcing officers to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowds and leading police to warn that rioters were out to kill officers and many locals to criticise the violence.
The National Police has now called in all its available agents and reinforcements have also arrived from other areas but have not yet made any arrests and said they are instead working to identify those involved in the riots in Cadiz.
