Police in Spain reveal the tricks of the trade used by home burglars
Would-be thieves in Spain have several techniques for checking if a house is empty
Home burglars in Spain are always poised and ready to take advantage of empty houses and villas full of all manner of valuables. For this reason, the National Police have taken to social media to warn property owners of the most common tricks used by thieves to enter houses, so they can equip themselves with tools to outsmart home invaders.
According to the officers, favoured methods of would-be thieves include inserting a thread or piece of plastic in the door jamb when they think the house empty. If, when the robbers return later, the item is undisturbed, they can be fairly confident that the coast is clear to break in.

“This piece of plastic is what they use to tell if you’re home”, the Police Chief explained. “They place it between the frame and the door and some time later, return to check if it is still in place.”
It is also quite common for thieves to use light-coloured thread or a string of glue to determine if a property is unoccupied.
Officers particularly advise anyone returning to their holiday home after a period of time away to meticulously check their doors for these items, but as the season becomes busier, it’s wise to have a look even if you’ve only been out for a few hours. If you notice anything suspicious, the National Police should be notified immediately.
