ARCHIVED - Police tips to avoid Christmas Lottery scams in Spain
Each year, countless people in Spain fall prey to Lottery scammers
Considered the biggest lottery draw worldwide in terms of payouts, the special Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad prize draw in Spain is held on December 22 each year and results in queues around the block of hundreds of people scrambling to buy their tickets from registered outlets. With every big event come copious opportunities for scams, and this year the National Police has issued a list of things for punters to look out for so that they don’t fall prey and lose out.
Top ten tips of the National Police
- Buy the lottery tickets for the draw in authorised establishments only, either in physical shops or online
- If you make your purchase on the Internet, save the emails related to it and take screenshots of the website if possible
- Be suspicious of any messages you receive informing you that you have won a prize if you know you haven’t entered a draw
- Check that your ticket has the official logo and code
- If you join a syndicate with family, friends or co-workers, photocopy the list of participants and the evidence of how much each person has contributed
- Try to keep the ticket in perfect condition, and remember that it expires after three months
- Take a picture of your ticket or write down the serial number and all other important elements and keep in a safe place in case you lose the original
- Report the loss or theft of your ticket at any National Police station, in addition to notifying Loterías y Apuestas del Estado
- If you have been the victim of a scam, do not hesitate to report it by providing all the information you have to the authorities
- If you have not been scammed but have any useful information relating to fraud, you can contact the authorities on the official website.
